Jawline · Fact-check
How do you lose under-chin fat? Not with jaw exercises.
Search for a sharper jawline and you'll find chewing gum, jaw trainers and face yoga. The problem is that most of what people want to change isn't the jaw at all. It's the soft tissue underneath it, and that follows very different rules.
Under-chin fullness is not jaw shape
The bone of your jaw sets its overall shape, and habits don't change bone in adults. What changes day to day and month to month is the fullness underneath: fat, fluid and how you hold your head. That's the part people usually mean when they say their jawline has gone soft.
This is the same line our mewing article draws from the other side. See /learn/does-mewing-work for why tongue posture and jaw exercises don't reshape bone.
What actually moves it
Overall body-fat percentage matters most. Fat under the chin tends to follow your overall level, so there's no way to spot-reduce it with chin exercises. Regular training and eating in a way you can sustain are the slow, reliable levers.
Fluid matters in the short term: salt, alcohol and short sleep all add morning puffiness. Posture matters in photos and in person: a head pushed forward bunches the soft tissue under the chin, while a level chin with the head stacked over the shoulders shows a cleaner line. This is general wellness information, not medical advice.
What about chewing gum and jaw trainers?
Chewing works the jaw muscles, and muscles can grow a little with use. That isn't the same as removing fat under the chin, and there's no good evidence it produces the defined line people are hoping for. Overdoing it can also strain the jaw joint.
If a product promises a new jawline in weeks through exercise alone, it's selling the part of the problem you can't change and ignoring the part you can.
A realistic timeline
Fluid-related puffiness can look different within days. Changes from body fat take months and show up gradually, which is why a single mirror check is a poor judge of progress and a consistent re-scan is a better one.
Our jawline score separates under-chin fullness (movable), definition (partly movable) and contour (structural), so you can see which part is actually changing. See /methodology for the full breakdown.
