Skin · Fact-check
Does drinking water actually improve your skin? Yes - just not the way you've heard.
"Drink more water for clear skin" is repeated so often it's treated as settled. It isn't wrong, exactly - it's just doing a lot less than the claim implies, and it gets credit for things it has nothing to do with.
What water actually does
Adequate hydration measurably affects skin's water content, elasticity, and how smooth its surface looks - real effects, backed by dermatology research, not folklore. If you're chronically under-hydrated, fixing that will visibly help texture and give skin a plumper, less dull look.
That's a genuine, controllable lever - it's also a modest one, not a routine on its own.
What it doesn't do
Water does not "detox" your skin or flush out toxins that cause breakouts - that framing isn't how skin or kidneys actually work. Acne itself is driven mainly by sebum production, hormones, bacteria, and inflammation; none of those are meaningfully changed by how much water you drink.
If water intake alone fixed acne, dermatology would have closed up shop years ago. It's one input among several, not a cure being withheld from you.
What actually moves clarity and evenness more
Consistent sleep, sun protection, and a skincare routine you actually stick with (rather than switching every two weeks) do more for visible clarity and evenness than hydration alone. Diet plays a role too - some research links high-glycemic-load eating patterns to more breakouts in some people, though this varies by individual.
None of this is a miracle stack. It's the boring, compounding kind of habit change - the same kind our own 90-day protocols are built around, because that's what actually shows up in a re-scan.
How we score skin instead of guessing
We don't collapse skin into one vague number. It's scored as four separate sub-factors - clarity, evenness, texture, and hydration - each tagged for how much a 90-day protocol can realistically move it. See /methodology for the full breakdown of how that scoring actually works.
